WebLayers Announces Comprehensive Solution for SOA Governance

WebLayers’ Policy Infrastructure now Leverages IBM’s WebSphere Service Registry and Repository

Cambridge, MA, October 4, 2006 – WebLayers, the leading provider of Policy Infrastructure for SOA Governance, today announced a new comprehensive solution for SOA Governance based on IBM’s recently announced WebSphere Service Registry and Repository.

SOA Governance is an extension of IT governance that requires the definition and enforcement of architectural standards and business policies to maintain order over the highly distributed nature of SOA. At the core of the solution announced today is a tight integration between WebLayers Center, an enterprise policy management and governance platform, and IBM’s WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. This integration, combined with collaborative services under IBM’s SOA Governance and Management Method, delivers a complete SOA Governance solution.

The WebSphere Service Registry and Repository, announced separately as part of new offerings from IBM focused on SOA (http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/20382.wss), is a key enabler for the broader SOA Governance needs with an optimized service registry and integrated service metadata repository by promoting visibility, consistency, and reducing redundancy in SOA. The seamless publish and find capabilities across all phases of SOA, foster reuse of services, enriching connectivity with dynamic and efficient interactions between services at runtime.

WebLayers Center is the Policy Infrastructure that enables you to define, enforce, and audit policies throughout the SOA lifecycle. Policies are stored in the repository in a standard format and can be enforced from design to deployment. Throughout the policy enforcement process, WebLayers collects valuable information about service quality such as performance, interoperability, security, and portability. This information is also stored in the repository together with the existing service metadata. You can be confident that all services are in compliance with your policies, and that you have the necessary insight to select the most appropriate services.

“SOA governance is an imperative as the business value of SOA depends heavily on the ability to enforce architectural standards and to share services throughout the enterprise. The integration announced today between WebSphere Service Registry and Repository and WebLayers Center enables our joint customers to fully realize the potential of SOA,” said Sandy Carter, vice president, SOA and WebSphere strategy, channels and marketing, IBM.

“Enterprises without an effective governance solution are at significant risk, particularly with the interdependencies that come from SOA,” said Gregg Bjork, CEO of WebLayers. “IBM and WebLayers have a shared vision of the criticality of SOA governance and lifecycle management. Today’s announcements will further extend IBM’s market leadership in SOA and we are pleased to be a partner in this initiative.”

In support of this new solution, both companies have published a new whitepaper entitled: “The Cornerstones of SOA Governance: Policies, Registries and Repositories” which is now available at http://www.weblayers.com/cornerstones

Solution Highlights

  • Jump Start your SOA Initiative with Policy Libraries - Build a solid governance foundation from day one by leveraging the vast collection of policies derived from field engagements, industry best practices, and standards bodies such as W3C and WS-I. The WebLayers SOA Policy Library covers all of the SOA layers including application code, services, messaging, user interface and business documents.
  • Define and Manage Policies - Extend the pre-built policies with custom policies to address your specific business, technical, or architectural requirements. A collaborative policy platform enables the creation, configuration and management of policies throughout the enterprise with strong support for federation.
  • Continuous Governance - Policies are automatically enforced against any new artifacts being published into the WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to ensure continuous governance. The metadata of these new services also contain information gathered from the compliance check including service quality, performance, availability and security.
  • Search, Find and Use Services with Confidence - WebSphere Service Registry and Repository becomes the system of record for all services metadata within the enterprise. An application can check with the system just before it invokes a service to locate the most appropriate service that satisfies its functional and performance needs. Because the system is governed by an active policy management system from WebLayers, you can be confident that all services are in compliance and have the necessary insight into the additional metadata necessary to make an informed decision. This capability helps make your SOA deployment more dynamic and moreadaptable to changing business conditions.
  • Visibility and Compliance - With WebSphere Service Registry and Repository, you have clear visibility across the SOA lifecycle with services metadata information such as description of a service, the associated lifecycle state, centralized policy documents, service associations and relationships, allowing you to better align IT to meet business needs. WebLayers Center further provides Business and IT stakeholders with real-time visibility into their enterprise SOA deployment, compliance status, and business impact. Management dashboards along with a comprehensive set of drill-down reports provide the appropriate level of detail to all users.
